5 Good Reasons to Do Missions

5 Good Reasons to Do Missions
By Lanilane Ocbina

Not all Christians want to go to a foreign land with no promise of abundant supply of “milk and honey”. Not to mention the possibility of living in that faraway place forever, in short, to be there and be unable to go back home anymore. Missions is a “great sacrifice” for most believers but for the missionaries themselves, it is obedience, noting “Obedience is better than sacrifice” 1 Samuel 15:22.
Missions is usually one of the most downplayed offices in the Kingdom of God because most believers do not understand its importance as the finishable task of God.

Many believers focus on the edifying of the present churches, which I believe is good but the problem is, Missions is often forgotten, considering that for the Lord, it is a major thing. Today there is a great imbalance between the “reached” and the “unreached” mission fields or the “pursuable task”[1] and the “finishable task”[2] so to speak. Both are important so both should be addressed well. As per this article, I would like to focus more on the task for the “unreached” or the “finishable task”, while reckoning with the role of the ministries in the “reached” or the “pursuable task”.

Talking about the unreached, we should understand missions well first. So what is missions? Who are the missionaries? And how critical is this office in the Kingdom of God?

Missions is the sending out of the called ones to those who have never heard of the Gospel. This is a different term from “Mission”, which pertains to the mission of the church that is to evangelize nations, baptizing them and teaching them to obey the Lord. The latter sounds more general and the former sounds more specific, pertaining to the “unreached”, and is categorized in many different forms depending on factors like geography, social and economic status, and religions. Mission is virtually the same with “Mission Dei”, which is the Latin phrase for the “Mission of God”.

Every Biblical church is supposed to be “Missional”. This means that each church has to have a vision of the completion of God’s work from their own “Jerusalem”, “Judea”, “Samaria” and not forget the “ends of the earth”. Hence, the missionaries should not be tried to be erased from the picture.

To summarize, some Missiologists will define these terms:
Mission: Science
Missions: Sciences
Missional: Scientific
Missionary: Scientist

You see, Missions is not an option, it has to be in every church. It does not matter whether it is a mega church or just a tiny house church. Again, every church has to be missional. How?

Not all churches can send their own missionaries but all churches can be prayer warriors for those who “go”. Therefore, the commitment to be the prayer warriors for the frontliners sent to do the finishable task is already having your church engaged to Missions. This way, you are called an “Intercessor”. On the other hand, every church can raise funds, no matter the amount, and send it for missions. You see, it is not about the amount but about the heart, as how the Lord Jesus saw the heart of the widow who gave her mites as her offering[3]. This way, you are called a “Sender”.

If you understand the Missions, then you can talk about it and teach about it in the churches. That will make you a “Mobilizer”. And if you sense that the Lord has called you to go to a foreign land to proclaim His Gospel, then you are definitely called a “Goer”.

None among the Intercessor, Sender, Mobilizer, and Goer is superior over the other. Everyone is important in this office. The important thing here is that you understand Missions and why you should be engaged. Here are five very important reasons to answer your “WHYs”:

1. COMMISSION. It is God's Mission. And it is your mission too. Whatever the odds, God has already pronounced the end point, which is victory. Those who will remain faithful in the end will share His glory. And as He prepares for that time, He wants virtually all to be saved and be there in that grand day. Now the question is, are you joining God in that pursuit?

2. PROVISION. You are called for it. And so everything you need will be sustained. Sure there will be doubts but when you are sure it is God calling you, you have to just go and obey and then leave the consequence to Him. For wherever the Lord leads, He provides. Most of the time, you are holding back when God is actually ready to open the gates of the heavens to pour down all the blessings in your life as you obey. So go for it and experience God’s miracles before your eyes!

3. COMPASSION. Love is your fuel to move forward. As you come to know Jesus more, you also grow in love for He is love. Missions exist because of love- God’s love for us and our love for His people. Hence if you do not love the unreached, there must be a problem. Check your heartbeat if it is still the same with Jesus’.

4. PROMOTION. As you grow deeper in the Lord, you go to the next level of being His follower. Jesus started it all when He did the ministry in Jerusalem and sometime in Samaria too. But when He ascended to heaven, His instruction is to keep the work going from Jerusalem, to Judea, to Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. That is what He wants to be completed. And from a baby Christian, you have grown to be part of that very essential task of the Lord. You are promoted to do harder work but for sure, you will see greater miracles that will blow your mind.

5. COMPLETION. His Word and His Promises will happen[4]. The End will come, and you are called by God to be part of His Mission's completion. What a privilege!

You see, God’s heartbeat is for everyone on earth to know about Him because that will make all things right.  Some would see that as an “inferiority complex” or a “superiority complex” but nonetheless, if you look at the real point in His Word, if you are not in God, your life is meaningless.
It is all about Him. It all has to be about Him not because He needs everyone’s attention but because, it is only through Him that we will get the true essence of life. It is all about Him because we are everything for Him. He demonstrated that when He died on the cross to cover our sins. And He resurrected to come back again. That is what we are to tell the world through Missions. So go and be part of the completion.

[1] Pursuable task is the work of the believers in places where the Gospel has already been proclaimed, which is often called the “reached”. In this context, there are already Christians who are working to advance the Kingdom of God. Meaning there are already viable churches and Bibles exist and are not new to the people.

[2] Finishable task is the work of the believers in places where the Gospel has never been heard of and that people have no idea who Jesus is or what the Bible is.
[3] Luke 21:1-4
[4] Very important to consider is Matthew 24:14.

No Matter What They Say, Give Your Life Away Anyway!

It just came to me, where God has already brought me. As I opened my email, I realized, I have been talking to social icons, national leaders, and other public figures. I have been to countries and I can't imagine how many impossible things have happened. I feel small. I have fears. There are times that doubts come to me. The thing called "distrust" make it heavy for me to move forward. But God reminded me today, "Hey, who's the boss by the way?". I remember this is a partnership. My Boss is greater than anybody else. Today I am refreshed by His visions.

As I've posted to my FB wall today: "Payting!"  For the Maker of all things in heaven and on earth, I'll keep on keeping on!

Keeping my focus on God and on them, whom Jesus loves

Hati yang menyembah

Archipelago Hopping (Short Mission Trip to Indonesia)

I had two interesting weeks to end the year from one archipelago to another. From the Philippines (of over 7000 islands) to Indonesia (of over 17,000 islands), it was pretty much a poke of revival in my heart. I was trying not to get overwhelmed, but I failed.

Indonesia is special. It appeared that we had so much fun with the sights because of our uploads in the social media but actually, our schedule was so hectic in the ministry. It was so much uplifting to see how God's hands move in the lives of the Indonesians and non-Indonesians who try to be Indonesians.

During the camp, I had an encounter with God. The passion of the youth for Jesus was quite contagious. I did not want to lose my opportunity to tell them : "Indonesia needs you.. Asia needs you.. the world needs you.. they need Jesus, and your role is to usher them to Him."

We also went to an orphanage which is owned by a couple. Here's what I wrote on the other blog:

"Around 30 kids were there and a team of youth from Bukit Sion Immanuel Church helped us organize and get connected to the Orphanage Silo, in Tuwangmanggu Surakarta, Indonesia. We gave rice, oil, noodles, vegetables, fruits, and other foods that would be good for two months. We also gave some gifts and school supplies to the orphans. The orphanage is a Christian orphanage, managed by a couple. The wife happened to be the daughter of the founder. They have an inspiring story about the orphanage. They are housing muslim kids who are abandoned by families and these kids get schooling from the orphanage, once they finish, they go out and live life with a purpose, as Christians. Most of these kids still go back, visit, and recognize what the orphanage has done in their lives. Let us continously pray for the couple's ministry. We have seen that it is not easy for them. By God's grace, they will be able to get through the challenges."

During the Christmas week, we were always waking up early and were not able to enjoy the water. However, it was all worth it. We hopped from one service to another and we were able to experience what Jeremiah's family does. Gurning family (Jeremiah's fam) ministers to the churches in Solo, Indonesia and sure it was a privilege to be with them during this time of the year.

One highlight of the trip that definitely shaped another significant missional perspective is the acquiantance with the missionaries to Indonesia. It is always an inspiration to meet these kinds of ministers who give their lives away for the sake of the Gospel. No matter how difficult their situations are, I can see the joy that will never be stolen from their whole entity. Obeying God gives you the fruit that no one can really grab off you.

Well the Lord really moves in unexplainable ways. In special ways. His hand is not shortened for Indonesia. There are many things that are in store for this huge Muslim country.

Flying so many times this year

I feel like I am one of the busiest missionaries here in APTS ^^
But yeah, I still have a lot to learn before I can be like them.
I believe God has called me for a mission and I am ready wherever He wants to send me.

I was just thinking a moment ago how many times I flew this year and how many more flights I have to take:

January- Manila to Legazpi
April- Legazpi to Manila
May- Manila to Legazpi
May-  Manila to Tacloban
June- Cebu to Manila
June- Manila to Legazpi
June- Legazpi to Manila
June- Clark to Hongkong
June- Hongkong to Clark

September- Manila to Bangkok
September-Bangkok to Manila
September- Manila to Legazpi
September-  Legazpi to Manila
October- Manila to Seoul
October- Seoul to Manila
December-January
-Manila to Kuala Lumpur to Myanmar
-Myanmar to Kuala Lumpur to Manila

I never had these multiple flights in my life. I know these are just few compared to other missionaries or even tourists. I just want to thank God for the opportunities to take all these flights where I have learned a lot. Most of these have really caused impact to my life as I have experienced His presence during my travels since I took all these flights ALONE with God.

I am not that rich to afford all these flights. This is why God is amazing. He provides.

READY TO OBEY HIS GREAT COMMISSION?

BE HIS DISCIPLE FIRST...

Luke 14:25-27

“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother , his wife and children, his brothers and sisters, even hiS own life- he cannot be my disciple…. Anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciples.”

“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother , his wife and children, his brothers and sisters, even hi own life- he cannot be my disciple.”

- This is not about “hating” or getting angry or becoming allergic with your family and loved ones. It doesn’t also mean to abandon them! That’s silly. God is love, and He surely doesn’t want you to hate anybody especially your family. In this verse, God just wants us to be reminded what life is all about. He should come first. He is above everything. Hence, before we please anyone around us, God should be pleased first. If pleasing other people, including your family, will not please God, then you should get over it. Everyone and ourselves should come next to Him. Life is not about you, it is all about Jesus.

“He cannot be my disciple.”

- If we claim that we are a follower of Christ or if we consider Him as our discipler, it should show in our way of living. Do we put Him fist above all things? Do we pause for a while to ask Him before making a decision?

“Anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciples..”

The cross is the sign of our redemption from sins through Christ. In any way we look, the cross will remind us how sinful we are but the grace of God has washed us from being sinful. Everyday, we should carry this cross. The weight of the cross- the burden of the sins of this world- we have to carry them as a burden not as a comfort or pleasure. It is easy to live in this world if we are conformed to its pattern. In contrast, it will be hard to carry the cross- the sins of this world. We belong to God not to this world. As aliens, strangers, foreigners in this world, knowing that everything is temporary, it will be hard to conform, that is- if we hate sin. The true disciple of God hates sin (but love the sinners, that’s why God love us) [I used “love” not “loves” because God, refers to the trinity- Father, Son, Holy Spirit]

ARE YOU A DISCIPLE OF GOD?

ARE YOU READY TO OBEY HIS GREAT COMMISSION?
